What is Ultrasound and What Can it Look For?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the inside of your body or other soft tissues. It is a safe, quick and painless test, with no radiation involved. Using ultrasound, we can image multiple organs and parts of the body to assess for and/or exclude disease.

The following conditions are some examples of what we can look for:

Abdominal conditions
Liver cirrhosis, bile duct obstruction, gallbladder inflammation, portal hypertension, spleen enlargement, hydronephrosis, kidney cysts, prostate enlargement and abdominal tumours.

Testes and scrotum
Tumours, cysts, epididymo-orchitis, hydrocoele

Musculoskeletal conditions
Arthritis, joint inflammation, tendinopathy, calcific tendinitis, tendon tear, frozen shoulder, ganglion and Baker’s cysts.

Lumps and Bumps
Lipomas, dermatofibromas, epidermoid and sebaceous cysts

Hernias - inguinal, incisional, femoral

Can I Get an Ultrasound Scan Near me?

Hinchley Medical Ultrasound Clinic is based in Esher, Surrey and we offer private ultrasound scans at a time suitable to you.

There is free parking on site and Hinchley Wood Station is just a minute walk away.

You can self-refer for a diagnostic scan but will need a referral for any ultrasound guided injections. All reports will be sent back to the individual referrer and your NHS GP. Give us a call to find out more.

How much does a private ultrasound scan cost?

The cost of a private ultrasound scan starts from £195 and depends on what type of scan you have.

The expertise of ultrasound lies in the hand of the operator, and here at Hinchley Medical all ultrasounds are performed by doctors (consultant radiologist). The price includes a consultation with the radiologist, an ultrasound scan +/- guided procedure and formal report.

We also offer package deals which include a GP consultation/health review and the relevant ultrasound scan, which may better suit your needs. You can learn more and view our price list here.

What is an Ultrasound Guided Injection?

Your doctor or healthcare professional may refer you for an ultrasound guided injection. This can be for many reasons, but most commonly for patients who have joint pain, problems with their tendons or for cyst aspiration.

A guided injection means that the procedure is performed using ultrasound which lends to real-time visualisation enabling safe and accurate needle positioning.

This ensures the medication is delivered exactly where it needs to be and minimises overall risk of the procedure. A blind injection, one that does not use ultrasound, does not have this guarantee.

Do I need an X-ray?

Sometimes you may need an X-ray before an ultrasound guided joint injection.

X-rays use radiation to produce a black and white image of the body and is primarily used in assessing bones. It is usually the first-line investigation for joint arthritis and can be used to assess its severity.

This can then help justify the need and location for an ultrasound guided injection. An x-ray is often also required before frozen shoulder hydrodilatation treatment. At Hinchley Medical, we can assess whether an x-ray is needed and can arrange for it to be done at our clinic also.
