We are delighted to be able to offer Short Syn.acthen Test privately at our clinic in the heart of Hinchley Wood in Surrey or at our Clinic in St Margarets Twickenham, at a highly competitive price. This is a test which requires a number of steps and has been typically hard to obtain in the private sector.
The Short Syn.acthen Test is a specific endocrinological test used to assess the function of your adrenal glands when there is suspicion of adrenal insufficiency, a condition where the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol.
It can lead to a variety of symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, and low blood pressure. By measuring cortisol levels before and after the injection, doctors can determine if your adrenal glands are functioning effectively.
The test takes place in our clinic. It involves measuring the levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, in your blood usually around 9AM and then injecting a synthetic hormone called Syn.acthen into your body.
You will be asked to fast for a few hours before the test, as food can affect cortisol levels. Your cortisol levels are measured after 30 minutes and 60 minutes.
On the day of the test, a healthcare professional will insert a small needle into one of your veins to draw a blood sample. This initial sample will be used as a baseline to compare with the cortisol levels after the Syn.acthen injection.
The results will usually be available within a few days, and we will send the results directly to you endocrinologist to discuss the findings with you.
Yes it is generally considered safe, with minimal risks or side effects.
